What is CBD Used For?

by Alfred van der Heide

A natural alternative to over-the-counter drugs, CBD can be used for just about everything. Keep reading to learn more about what CBD is and how it can be used.

What is CBD?

Formally known as cannabidiol, CBD is one of the most popular active ingredients in the cannabis plant. Along with CBD, cbd beautydelta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is another active ingredient prevalent in the plant but is much different than CBD. THC is derived from the marijuana plant, while CBD is hemp-derived. However, those interested in learning more about CBD should know that it does not cause a high-like feeling as THC does when consumed.

Unlike THC, cannabidiol does not cause users to experience the same high-like effects. According to the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.” The report further states that there is no current evidence of any health-related side effects when using pure CBD.

Is CBD a Drug?

The short answer is no. As CBD’s popularity has ramped up, more people have been asking questions about the legalization of CBD and whether or not it is a drug.

If the CBD that consumers are using is pure then the product is not considered a drug. Consumers and potential users of CBD, alike, should learn more about CBD before making a purchase as there are many different companies, brands, and products out there.

In 2014 when the Farm Bill was passed, the legalities surrounding CBD became more clear. The 2014 bill allowed states to grow and research CBD under regulated programs. Since CBD is often associated with its marijuana counterpart, the 2014 Farm Bill also stated that any hemp products with less than 0.3% THC are not classified as marijuana and therefore are legal.

A few years later in 2018, the Farm Bill was updated to include the production, consumption, and sale of CBD products in the United States. This update only included CBD products with less than 0.3% THC, as any products with more than that percentage are considered marijuana.

Even though CBD with less than 0.3% THC is federally legal, each state may have different regulations regarding the usage and purchasing of CBD. Before buying, it is important to do your own research to ensure that you are not breaking any of your state’s laws.

Does CBD Get You High? What is CBD Used For? 8

No—CBD will not cause users to experience “high” when consuming or applying hemp-derived CBD products. While THC will cause an intoxicated feeling, CBD should not be confused with marijuana: Cannabidiol is non-psychoactive and allows users to experience many healing benefits without a “high.”

CBD can be used in many different ways and provides an abundance of healing benefits. Scientists and health professionals are continuing to research and find the best ways for hemp-derived CBD to be used. The oil is known for being a great natural alternative to over-the-counter (OTC) medications that many people use for anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses.

While vast research has already been conducted regarding CBD, there is still more to be done. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Currently, the only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a prescription oil called Epidiolex. It’s approved to treat two types of epilepsy.” As mentioned above, CBD can be used as a stress reliever, but research about whether or not it can be a treatment for Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and more is still ongoing.

The possibilities for CBD are endless! And while research is out there, it is always important to check in with your doctor first if you are thinking about and are interested in using CBD products to help with some of your symptoms or merely adding it to your wellness routine.
